And the Winner Is……

The Shamen…..the bloody Shamen with bloody Mr. C and his cheesy Raps about the drugs.

You, the public have spoken, but because they only won by just 4 votes I’ll sneak in some Faithless at weekends. May do a Prodigy series later in the Year. You’re all winners because your not paying a schilling for it !

Another massive thank must go to DJ Mr. Tim (and his animal skeleton head) for pumping over a 100 likes in the last few days. My phone was pinging when I retired to bed last night and was still pinging at half six this morning when I arose. Note to self – Remember to halt email notifications immediately !!!

The Parachute Club – Alienation + Re-ups (Canadian 12″)

More from Canada!

The debut release from The Parachute Club from 1983 with production from Daniel Lanois and remixed by band member Billy Bryans and Rick Capreol.

Strong vocals from Lorraine Segato (dropping the S word on your debut release – very edgy but also name checking Ronnie Reagan – too edgy) and a slice of New Wave dance with a synth bassline and plenty of congas. The message still stands today.

The B-side is a dubbied out version , Club-Ready.

Moev – Alibis + Link (Canadian 12″)

More Canadian stuff this time from Industrial Synth Group Moev. Produced by Greg Reely. Christine Jones provides the etheral backing vocals over the clunky bass and arpeggio sequencers.

Mix 2 is more of a Dub mix, less vocals and more percussion.

“Ha!” begins with a preacher on the radio waves as the programmed beats kick in. A guitar lead threading its way in and out of the synth stabs. A vey melodic instrumental with the Preacher samples in the background, reminds me of New Order.

“Chairman” has a harpsichord synth and more guitar. The vocals are back in the mix but it is a decent track, a hidden gem.

Men Without Hats – Hey Men + Re-ups (Canadian 12″)

Social Commentary and a change of musical style.

Synths are put on the backburner to be replaced by chugging guitar and female backing vocals, the only thing to tell it’s the band is the distinct low vocals of Ivan. Mike Scott does a safe production job. Roadhouse music but with a serious message.

This was released in 1989 from the ’88 album, “The Adventures Of Women & Men Without Hate In The 21st Century” – I guess I know where they were going with that title.

The Safety Dance gets an unrecognisable rework , a missed opportunity for the band to bring it up to date. It really is a different track with kids voices sampled and a different bassline.

P.O.D. – Boom (US Promo 12″)

Nu Metal ! There’s a label I’ve not head for ages!

From 2002 and from the San Diego Christian Rock Band “Payable On Death” (not a very Christian name!) Seeing them teaming up with The Crystal Method. It’s all street beats and heavy riffs.

I used to lap this stuff up back in the day. (Guiltily looks at all the CDS’s I have accumulated at the time…..Rip ?)

Herbie Hancock – Rockit 2.002 + Link (US 12″)

Eventually but not quite but it’s not far off! “Rockit” appears on the blog.

A re-rub from 2002 from Coldcut (Side A) and Bill Laswell (Side B) which keeps the spirit of the groundbreaking original and adds some extra scratches and drops.

Coldcut add the bass and keyboards of Dave Renwick, (Communards) Paul Chivers (ramjac) the drum fills and extra scratches from Coldcut’s Matt Black. It is thus very different, almost a Cover with some Coldcut-ism’s. Huge drums and a keyboard solo.

Laswell’s version (He wrote and played bass on the original) is the closest to the original and the turntablists are like a roll call (Babu, DJ Q-Bert, DXT, Faust & Shortee, Mix Master Mike, Rob Swift)

The B-52’s Meet DJ Tonka – (At The) Love Shack (Australian CDS)

Another rare oddity from Mike B’s CD collection.

From 1999 and going for a team-up with German Techno DJ Tonka (mate of Ian Pooley) He doesn’t go down that route as this an early bit of work by him to promote his mix LP “Freaktime (In One Go)” from the previous year. It’s more of a House groove, piano and organ (even cheesy sampled horns!)

A Party Tune which would mix in with CeCe Peniston ..Finally!

For fans of the normal version there is the Album version included and I’d forgotten how different the original Remix sounds! Done by Ben Grosse it features a samples bass and loads of synth, why has this one evaded my ears all these years.

NEW MUSIC SATURDAY – Daniel Land

Proving I’m not stuck in the past the series is back!

Been a fan for a while as I was a bit of a shoegaze fan for a bit when Sonic Cathedral used to put nights on in Manchester in the early ’00’s. Daniel Land and The Modern Painters was what it was when I first came across this amazing talent, he lived in Manchester back then and now has settled in London.

He has been solo for a while now and he mailed out this, a free single (for now) and a taster of his forthcoming stuff. Quality Dream Pop
