So that was 2023, the year I dusted down my record player and got it ripping again and the year 534,496 of you (from a few days ago) came to have a look at the blog. I did 569 posts, I knew I’d been busy and there has been 2309 comments for me to appreciate or get annoyed about. Weirdly “Themes From Great Cities” was my top referrer and it closed due to MEGA deleting the files in November !!! It’s on Blogger and I didn’t even know!!

First of a couple of interesting bootlegs to keep you in a NYE party mood.
From 2000 and on the Excursion label Sade gets an update with some House Beats but with full vocals and they even kept some sax in there. Originally from her debut album from 1985.
Hancock’s Classic still has the electro beat with some extra synth tweaks with jazzy undertones. More of a cover than a remix and a bit lame, especially when the filters and gimmicks are used.
Both remixes were done by Canadian Julius Papp.

From 1987 and a splendid line-up.
Kicking off with a collab between David Harrow and vocalist Jeanie Tracy (backing vocalist for Peabo Bryson, Narada Michael Walden, Michael Bolton, Aretha Franklin and released one early 80s solo album. Close friend of Sylvester.) A very meaty bit of Proto House with a solid bass, mixed by Joseph Watt.
Psychic TV have “Hex Sex” from the ’86 release “The Magickal Mystery D Tour E.P.” re-edited by Watt off a Phil Harding remix. You would not know it’s them , it could be New Order tbh.
“Satellite” is sped up and given a bit of urgency almost going into Industrial. “Where Are You?” has a great intro and then goes into a weird Balearic mid-tempo with plenty of unusual samples. Exorcise the Devil!
Frankie’s “Warriors” has much more synths and sequencers added. Keeping the tempo up there with that sampled bass. Full vocals and very different.
Watt also improve “Cry Wolf” toughening up the bass and drums. Art Maharg mix really suits the Idol track, a bit of a forgotten track by him, great guitar work. The pick of the mixes.
An obscure B-52’s track closes the album. Using an old skool Bass synth used effectively on this one from “Bouncing Off The Satellites”, a very sparse arrangement.

Another gift from Lo and this 2006 re-issue of the first album from Nottingham’s forgotten synth / New Wavers Fatal Charm – originally released on the French Carrere label back in 1985. NOW IN FLAC!!
All written and produced by band member Paul Arnall – hats off to him. Assisting him was Vocals, Keyboards, Piano – Sarah Simmonds (Both Arnall went on to be in 90’s band, State Of Grace and the The Underground House Orchestra in the early noughties ) and Drums – Paul Richards.
The style could be described as more Rocky than your usual New Wave but the influences are still there.
So there must be nearly everything they’ve done on here. A little shrine on the Internet, thanks Lo for the introduction and torch bearing!

From Lo and a great bit of obscure Goth New Wave from Holland’s The Essence from 1986.
The line-up was; Backing Vocals – Beverley Hills, Bass – Jerry Geertsma, Drums – Olaf Willemsen, Keyboards – The Midnight Rambler and Voice, Guitar- Hans Diener. Produced and remixed by David Ros and Nick Ralph on the Midnight Music label.
For Cure fans and the curious it plods along with its strong drums.

From May 2010 and an update of a Classic with added chugging guitars and kettle drums !!!!
Remixed by Mancunian producer / musician Mark Reeder, Head of German Techno / Trance label MFC and member of Shark Vegas and Berlin resident since ’76.
Does it work ? Yes and no. Foxx asked Reeder personally for it to be included on the “Metronomic” LP
The song is here it in it’s entirety with the full vocals and the distinct riff with added parts, an E bow guitar solo and extra synths.
The full intended cut is track 3, with the extended build and lavish arrangement, okay I like it!

This is a re-issue from a Box Set I’ve had for 4 years and never opened ! A little oddity from September 1981 introducing an established act, Fad Gadget and a new act , Depeche Mode – both signed to Mute.
These are unique versions that later appeared on albums. On recording it seems they are in Mono but that might me the Flexi Disc cut.
Depeche Mode seem to having fun , even with the ironic title. Sequenced and playful. Fad Gadget goes a bit electro funk with plenty of pots and pans, funky bass guitar and Linn Drum.

Another John Foxx track but not from my box – he beat me to it! So a gift from Mike B (and saves me ripping it.)
From October 1981 and with the young Gareth Jones as engineer. This is a return to the Ultravox of “Systems Of Romance.” Amazing through headphones. The second and final single from the album, “The Garden.”
Joe Dworniak (I- Level, Shake Shake!) engineers on the B-side and I think plays bass. Recorded at Moody Studios in Acton , London. “Swimmer 1” is very raw , guitar driven with slapping drums and Robin Simon’s punk guitar. Who did the saxophone ?
“Swimmer 2” is a Classic with Arp Odyssey and Choral touches that give it an epic quality.

Everyone who sees me thinks I’m into guitars probably because I look like a bit of a Rocker. My first love was synths having grown up in the 70’s and then through Punk, New Romantics saved me.
But I do like the odd bit of Rock. So this is one for you…… Retro Hound ? Air guitar to some pretty decent Hair Rock megamixes. Not a genre you’d expect to be mixed together but here it is. Probably ideal for a NYE party for a bit of collective air guitaring.
A German CD released in 1994 and covering all your favourites, there are plenty in there. That Metallic Mix is a definite one for the fans. The same label released an unofficial compilation called “Michael Jackson – My Love 4 Kids Is True” !!!
