Mark Hollis ‎– Mark Hollis (CD Rip)

holllisss

Mark Hollis and his voice was always a constant as I grew up in the 80’s. None of my friends were really into Talk Talk at the time but I found solace when listening to the albums “The Party’s Over” and “It’s My Life” on my headphones. The arrival of “The Colour Of Spring” took a while to for me to get into, hearing the vocal performance on “Chameleon Day” I realised how passionate Hollis was about his music. The subsequent albums needed a good listen and got me thinking, “Shit, there are no synths anymore, where are the synths?” but I listened and appreciated the depth, warmth and feeling.

The solo album is like a companion piece to “Laughing Stock” recorded with some friends and session musicians and released in January 1998. It was to be the Curtain Call for Hollis who called it quits from the music industry straight after.

I won’t try to unpick the album, it needs to be listened to as a whole. Just enjoy the creative genius that has sadly left us.

Orchestral Maneouvres In The Dark – Live 7th December 1979

From the Camden Electric Ballroom (where they were supporting The Talking Heads) this is from the Live and Loud website/blog of Flick Martian who specialises in restoring old live bootlegs, amazing stuff and an amazing site !

http://www.liveandloudshows.com

I suppose it is a way of apologising to someone who requested the live recording from last year with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra which I thought I had got but could not find.

Very raw and quite entertaining; the duo plus a tape to tape rip through some tracks off their debut album. McCluskey’s between track banter is also quite amusing.

The Beloved ‎– It’s Alright Now (+ Re-issue Download +12″)

Again from 1990 and another single from The Beloved. I love the way that Jon Marsh can come up with three very different and creative mixes of an already good track. All personal preferences here, but far superior to the normal version.

A It’s Alright Now (Rattling Good Time)
B1 It’s Alright Now (Back To Basics)
B2 It’s Alright Now (Feeling Fine)

And here is the download release from December 2018. Containing the Radio version, a great bit of synthpop. The Back To Basics Instrumental is more of a Dub with a few well chosen lyrical snippets, nice and deep (Ibiza ready)

“Scarlet Beautiful” sounds like an early demo. Early House beats with a flute sample, an instrumental that builds in its own basic way. It was a track that later appeared on copies of “Hello”.

ABC ‎– Love Conquers All (12″)

ABC definitely had a lean period in the early 90’s. (as did a lot of successful 80’s bands) They did try to shape their sound for the time but maybe the record buying public were prejudice, “Why can they have a second bite of the cherry ?”

It didn’t get a release in the US even though it had a very edited Morales mix. The other mix was by Boilerhouse. ( Ben Wolff & Andy Dean) Is that not Phil Manzanera on guitar ? So they were not scrimping on getting the right people in. It did nothing in the charts.

B-side featured on the CD version as track 10 on the reissue and shows how slick the production was of Dave Bascombe with all the ABC trademarks and a nod to disco.

Technotronic ‎– This Beat Is Technotronic (Belgium 12″)

From 1990 and on the Belgium label ARS Productions this was this featured Good Old MC Eric! (Eric Martin from Wales!)

Not a great variety of difference in the mixes. Only the first one contains the rap. Hip-house which sounds sooo slow compared to today’s stuff. It hasn’t aged very well!

Utah Saints ‎– What Can You Do For Me (US Promo 12″)

All hail the Akai sampler!

The debut from Leeds group Utah Saints, Jez Williams and Keith Langley, (who both used to be in Industrial group The Cassandra Complex and their subsequent break away group MDMA) Originally from 1990 this US DJ Promo came out in 1993.

Eurythmics  (There Must Be An Angel) and Gwen Guthrie get sampled (and credited!) on this timeless classic. Produced by the band and . David Morales remixes the tracks, the Klub Mix going for more of a piano House vibe and vocals from an unknown Diva or is more Gwen Guthrie.

“I Want You” is worth a listen as well, prog rock feel to it over house beats.  It sampled Slayer – War Ensemble and has a Prodigy vibe to it (R.I.P Keith Flint) 😦

Silly Sunday Song 31 – Vanilla Ice ‎– Play That Funky Music (US 12″)

It is cringeworthly awful.

Playing the misunderstood and under represented White Rapper card, this came out in 1990. A  dodgy cover from Robert Matthew Van Winkle.

Sparse production with just a deep bassline and those toe curling rhymes. The Gail King remixes are a bit better with a nice (and short thank God!) medley megamix with the previous hit “Ice Ice Baby.” Much more street sounding and there is an imstrumental which you could get away with. Shame about the rapping and the whole image thing.

Way Out West Featuring Miss Joanna Law ‎– The Gift (US Promo 12″)

gifted

Progressive House from 1986 that makes you want to go on a Beach holiday. Way Out West were a duo from Bristol, Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff . This featured the spaced-out vocals from Joanna Law (from her song ”First Time Ever”,who was in a short lived, late 80’s group called City Heat with her brother Simon) and has some breakbeats (especially on the Club Mix)

“Be As One” is another deep, progressive cut featuring the vocals of DJ Sasha and Maria Nayler that was a hit in its own right.
