Yes ‎– Owner Of A Lonely Heart (CD Single Re-issue)

From 1991 and in FLAC !! Yes FLAC! (Care of WINX…thanx!)

Horn and Langan reboot this release for a 1991 release. The original version is here to compare.

The “Wonderous Mix” is a bleep fest with a bit of a chilled out vibe. A bit Yello – like. 808 State complete the other 2 mixes. WOW! 808 State were at the top of their game, gritty electro sounds and rolling breaks. But leave nothing much left (if at all of the song!) on the first mix. The second mix resembles the original with some added percussion and techno sounds.

Wire ‎– Life In The Manscape (US Promo 12″)

Well this is going to be a bit of a ball ache.

As you may of found Zippyshare has been blocked by most of the UK main internet providers. So all my folders are in limbo unless I start farting around with a VPN and try to sneak around. So I’m experimenting with possible replacements (There are 3 to choose from here)

Back to the muzak and still stuck in 1990!!!

wired

Wire released this to promote their new album “Manscape.” Sounding a bit New Order-ish with a blend of punk guitars and New Wave nuances, all with the bitter sweet vocals of Colin Newman. Joined by his bandmates Gilbert (guitar), Lewis, (bass) and Gotobed (drums) This was from a very interesting and underrated album.

Produced by Shriekback’s David M Alan it is unusual muddy production (or recording?) This promotional 12″ single gathers up the three tracks from the album that otherwise only appear on CD and cassette versions.

The 12″ starts off with a bit of a Tetris theme tribute a proper 12″ mix 🙂

“Stampede” is almost a rock out with sampled bass and wailing guitars, nice track.

“Children Of Groceries” has some experimental sounds accommodating the dubby but weird lyrics of Newman

“Free Speech And More TV distribute liberally”

Silly Sunday Song 32 – Edelweiss ‎– Raumschiff Edelweiss (German 12″)

Had this for ages waiting for a 90’s revival (Thanks Winx for the initial share!)

Crazy Austrian Techno, based on the Star Trek theme. Very, very silly with added samples from other novelty records. I really quite like it and the promo video is excellent.

“Space Yodel” still using some Star Trek sound fx but does contain some interesting old skool sounds and plenty of yodeling. “Transporter Room” is a moody (less novel) piece of Euro techno (with yodeling!)

Definition Of Sound ‎– Now Is Tomorrow (Remixes) (12″)

Always ahead of their time in terms of sound and arrangement, Definition Of Sound (Donald Weekes & Kevin Clark) released this debut in 1990 and went on to have successful career in the following 2 years. This has samples from astronauts speaking to Richard Nixon on the main mix. The “Mo’Bass” mix has layered beats and the “Inner Space” has a psychedelic World Music vibe to it.

Galliano ‎– Welcome To The Story (12″)

gally

Jazz infused Hip Hop from 1990 (again!) with a Rap with a distinctive London accent. Three mixes done by the band with producer Chris Bangs. Effortlessly cool for a Sunday come down. Leroy Hutson “All Because Of You” from 1975 gets sampled.

Gunshot ‎– Crime Story / No Sell Out (12″)

Harder , darker UK Hip Hop from Gunshot formed by MC Mercury, MC Alkaline, Q-Roc, DJ White Child Rix and DJ/MC Barry Blue from the area of Leyton in east London, around 1988/1989. They were originally called Sudden Impact.

Industrial, street noise with plenty of attitude and rawness (it reminds me of Meat Beat Manifesto) released in 1991. Both tracks are good, especially the Robo-Cop style of the electro funk “No Sell Out.”

The tracks are supplemented by an instrumental / dub version. Pre-dates Grime

Intelligent Hoodlum ‎– Back To Reality (12″)

NYC artist Percy Chapman released this in 1990 and it was co-written and produced by Marley Marl and remixed by CJ Mackintosh. It borrows a lot from Soul II Soul’s “Back To Life.” As well as a little bit of William DeVaughn’s “Be Thankful for What You Got”

4 mixes with the minimal “Back To Basics” mix being the pick. The “Drum And Bass” mix isn’t what you think, no frantic breakbeats just a smooth groove.

The Deff Boyz Featuring Tony Mac ‎– Swing (12″)

This SNAP “The Power” imitator from 1990 sees Paul Hardcastle getting in on the action. Adding high production skills and unusual samples (Thatcher and violins) and obvious ones with a rap by Tony Mac and a host of models posing on the cover to look like a band.

The B-side is a longer instrumental, a copy cat or a dancefloor classic ?

Urban Dance Squad ‎– Demagogue (US Promo 12″)

If it’s the 90’s there is bound to be a fair share of Rap in all its guises. Not everyone’s cup of tea but some regulars do like a bit of Hip Hop so let me introduce you to….

Netherlands Rap collective “Urban Dance Squad” whether they danced or lived in a built up area I’m not sure.

Made up of Arjen de Vreede (DJ DNA), Michel Schoots (Magic Stick and drummer), Patrick Tilon (who became Junkie XL) , René van Barneveld (Tres Manos and guitarist) and Silvano Matadin (Silly Sil and bassist) they did the usual mid 90’s of fusing different styles of rock and funk.

This is from 1985 and comes with a clutch of short mixes. Included is one from The Dust Brothers (John King and Michael Simpson)giving it a funky edge. The real rock edge comes on track 3, the sound of a band enjoying themselves jamming away. Rage Against the Machine like.

DJ Moe Love works the Street Steelo mixes giving it a smoother vibe. I wonder what has happened to Junkie XL ???
