The The – Uncertain Smile (US 12″)

A truly extended version at 10 minutes long. A beautiful classic from 1982 with extended flute and saxophone solos and no Jools Holland doing the piano, that was on the album version. More xylophone too!

“Three Oranges..” is full of Eastern promise with the a Cure-like guitar over subdued percussion and Johnson’s vocals heavily effected, almost alien-like. Hypnotic and psychedelic.

“Waiting For The Upturn” starts quite acoustic and then the flute and sax returns into a 60’s psychedelic track. Leftovers from the album that never was “Pornography Of Despair”

  1. This was quite a nice into to Matt Johnson for me. At the time, I likened it to Polyrock when the DJ I knew who gave me the promo [not commercial enough, I guess!] asked what I thought of it.
