Various ‎– If You Can’t Please Yourself You Can’t, Please Your Soul (Vinyl LP)

I have this on CD (I think it’s original release but I’ve not checked if it has rotten away, seriously !!!) So thanks to Mike B for providing a vinyl rip of this alternative compilation from artists who were on Some Bizarre in 1985, some incredibly diverse stuff too.

It’s short and to the point. Only 10 tracks, some exclusive to the release.

J.G . Thirlwell kicks off proceedings with the singalong-a-hymn, chanting and electronic drums on this exclusive track. It was recorded around the time the material for the ‘HOLE’ album and adds some Industrial guitar and bass towards the end. Twisted gospel.

“Product Patrol” by Cabaret Voltaire another exclusive track, short and lively and dating from 1983 but never officially released. It sounds newer and had plenty of warped bass sounds.

Test Dept. whisk up a storm (probably using whisks) in a total percussive work out with additional yelling and noise, primeval industrial.

Marc Almond goes full croon, piano and drum machine kick in and the warped orchestra starts up (a collaboration with Foetus – J.G. Thirlwell) One of the albums highlight and a long track 6 and half minutes)

Psychic TV get into samplers with a collage off sounds and Genesis’s forlorn and disinterested vocals over a mutant , electro beat….weird ending.

The stand out track is The The “Flesh And Bones” from the “Soul Mining ” sessions (or earlier) Pure class!

John Balance as a solo side project to Psychic TV, Coil’s track, mixes up the guitar and samples, claustrophobic indie and almost Pre Industrial.

A surprise on this is Yello and an edit of the “Live From The Roxy” called “The Roxy Cut.” I love the raw Dieter vocals. Oh, to have been there!

I quite like the delicate but sumptuous orchestra on the Virgina Astley track (another highlight)

Closing with the weird sampling of Einstürzende Neubauten, “Wardrobe” – hard, abrasive and nasty. Animal noises and electric saws clash with piano battering.
