The Wonder Stuff ‎– A Wish Away (12″)

Another 4 track E.P. by the bright-eyed and bushy tailed Wonder Stuff. From the Summer of ’88 the short but catchy and “most moshed to at the student union” track. As with lots of their stuff, it’s short, catchy and straight to the point. I’m liking the different feel of “Goodbye Fatman” with those typical acerbic lyrics from Miles Hunt.

With PWEI and Ned’s in the 90’s they offered a Black Country alternative to Madchester

Pailhead – Trait E.P. (12″)

A bit of a supergroup with the collaboration of Ministry’s Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker (on guitar and bass respectively) joining up with vocalist Ian MacKaye (Fugazi, Embrace, Minor Threat) with Wax Trax! in-house drummer, William Rieflin.

A 4 tracker that looks towards Killing Joke as an influence. Not too heavy or industrial. “Man Should Surrender” starts us off with tribal drumming and an elastic bassline.

“Anthem” is up next, gradually building it’s apocalyptic message. “I Don’t Want To Be Your Pailhead No More!”

“Don’t Stand In Line” see’s the Ministry/Fugazi team providing punk advice. The final track uses Chatline recordings and is the pick of the bunch with it’s thundering bass.

“You chat away while I bleed Then take my money”

Pete Wylie ‎– If I Love You (12″)

wylie

Slightly more commercial is this piece of synth-pop from Pete Wylie, released in 1987 after the success of “Sinful”.  Steve Peck gives it a commercial dance mix over the original production by Michael Frondelli. With additional vocals by the late Josie Jones who used to be in the Mighty Wah! with Wylie.

The B-side, “Never Fall For A Whore”, is an epic track that builds and builds a bit like a Frankie Goes To Hollywood track with guitars, produced immaculately by Zeus B. Held.

An under appreciated talent.

The Leather Nun ‎– Pink House (12″)

Coming from the same direction as Electric Six, Sweden’s The Leather Nun’s had their tongue-in- cheek approach to rock with an alternative/punk edge. Anders Olsson (Bass), Nils Wohlrabe, (guitar) Bengt Aronsson, (guitar and keys) Gert Claesson (drums) and founding member Jonas Almqvist (vocals) a.k.a. Lädernunnan where a cult band in their home country.

Main track is produced by Bill Buchanan (Fields Of Nephilim producer) and is a bit of an Alt-Rock classic and an anti-Reagan anthem, delivered in an Iggy Pop. It was a spoof of of John Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses”. A forgotten gem !

“Speed Of Life” is a rock stomper, for chicken-dance enthusiasts everywhere.

The bonus track is deliberately sleazy, like an X-rated Dire Straits !!!

Danielle Dax ‎– Big Hollow Man (12″)

Still left of the mainstream with this alternative rock release by Danielle Dax. Not as dark and gothy as the cover suggests. “Big Hollow Man” was a remix from the album “Inky Bloaters” from 1987. With additional guitar and keys from David Knight and bass from Ian Sturgess from her old band, The Lemon Kittens. A darker Kate Bush with Prince overtones on this alternative dance floor filler; stomp rock.

“Muzzles” is more straightforward, with layered vocals a pop/rock track from her album, “The Chemical Wedding.”

Last bonus track is the World Music / Tribal influenced instrumental “The Passing Of The Third Floor Back”,short and strange.

All Danielle Dax stuff has been re-upped for your perusal.
