Blue Rondo À La Turk – Two and a half 12 inches ?

These were an early 1980’s British latin/jazz/pop group who disbanded in 1984. Some went on to form Matt Bianco. Led by singer/lyricist and cover designer Chris Sullivan, originally the group were a six-piece: Sullivan, Christos Tolera (vocals), Mark Reilly (guitars), Mike Lloyd Bynoe a.k.a. “Choco Mick” (drums and timbales), Kito Poncioni (bass) and Geraldo D’Arbilly (percussion).

This was the band’s follow-up single to minor hit “Me And Mr. Sanchez”; “Klactoveesedstein” was released in 1982 and produced by Godley and Creme. Nigel Mills provided the mix on the B-side.

A Klactoveesedstein
B Klacto (Part Two)

The immediate follow-up was “The Heavens Are Crying” this time produced by Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley, so sounding a bit like Madness in places. Like the previous single the track is given long separate mixes. (both around 10 mins long!!!) A great jazz/funk work out!!

B The Cities Are Dying

So the half a 12″ I have is “Masked Moods” from 1984 (??? – it was very damaged, something had been spilt on one side and it was warped)  They were now a 3 piece. So we get a re-recorded version of “Heaven….” and the Latin Jazz of “Samba….”

A2 – The Method – 5:21 *  (* – not included)

All other Blue Rondo links , “Carioca” and “Slipping Into Daylight” have been re-upped for your listening pleasure!

  1. Never thought about it till just now, but I wonder if Matt Bianco’s “Matt’s Mood” around the same time was their piss take on the now trio Blue Rondo’s “Masked Moods”, or vice versa, or just an odd homonym-like coincidence?

    1. I see what you mean…intriguing !

  2. Two of my favorite production teams involved? This is a must for me. Remember those weird Godley & Creme directed videos from the 80s? 🙂
