Sade – Smooth Operator (US Promo 12″)

This needed to be on here and I was surprised when it wasn’t!  When it came out in 1984 it was classified as “coffee-table soul” and a bit of a Yuppie anthem – to be played on repeat (vinyl ?) at cocktail parties. The smoky vocals of Sade Adu keep this altogether with her band providing the chilled jazz backing. You can’t take away the sheer quality of the track, produced by Robin Millar, with the definitive 8 min version on the B-side; a must listen, jazz funk masterpiece with all the solos and an instrumental breakdown, (apparently a mixture of the track with a track called Red Eye ?) Smoothness!
