I hate Spotify, I hate it’s concept, it’s bloody annoying adverts, it’s smugness, the way it suggests and tries to connect. It has killed off peoples stamina of actually making the effort to listen to a full album. Choice, Choice, Too Much Bloody Choice.
That 80’s Night I went to at the weekend was typical of Spotify disco; DEVO one minute, Guns N Roses the next, followed by Soft Cell. So it ended up very random, no flow or real forethought. Years ago you would have had to plan it, either with vinyl, CD or even tapes (and hope no one asked for requests!!) It was hard to cover all the bases and by not having “everything in the world” you had to pick and choose very carefully, build the atmosphere ,keeping an eye on the floor and doing a bit of second guessing what the crowd would want. Now it becomes a bit of a request show with styles clashing and people asking for the obvious. I really hate the obvious because it breeds sameness and blinkers people’s views and listening tastes. If you remember back in the early 21st Century you could buy 5 CD’s of 80’s from the Petrol Station and it was the always same old Shit! I think this is why this blog exists! RANT OVER 🙂
So returning to 1980 and the now fully post- punked figure of Germany’s Nina Hagan. Here she cover’s Sinatra’s “My Way” which knocks spots off the Sid Vicious version. Add a little bit of synth, some verses sung in German and the weirdest vocal performance you could ever hear.
A couple of B-sides with an edited version of a track called “Alptraum” it’s decidedly wacky with elements of New Romantics and Prog in there, whilst “No Way” is a very short instrumental reprise of the A-side. Love that bass sound!
This isn’t on Spotify either so I don’t want you missing out 😉
