Jon Astley – Put This Love To The Test (US Promo 12″)

Producer Jon Astley comes out from behind the mixing desk for stab at Pop Stardom releasing this in 1988. Never heard it before, synthy, quite catchy (reminds me a bit of Babybird / Lloyd Cole via Right Said Fred)

A handful of pretty mixes done by his mate Andy MacPherson ( who also worked with The Who/ Teenage Fan Club/ Eric Clapton as a studio bod) Really ? A House Mix?? Not sure about that description. The normal 12″ is quite fun though.

It failed to dent the charts, lack of airplay due to the risque lyric.

  1. Nice one mate – off his album The Compleat Angler. I can’t remember why I bought it back in 1988, but I thoroughly enjoyed it (was it on sale? Anyway, must do a rip of it someday). Weird trivia: one of his older sisters married Pete Townshend, and the other, Virginia, put out a sublime album called From Gardens Where We Feel Secure in 1982.

  2. Thanks! I used to own this 12’er, but lost it ‘somewhere’. Regarding the last comment, I have both of his LP’s including ‘Everyone Loves The Pilot’ with the moderate hit ‘Jane’s Getting Serious’. That track was used for a Heinz ketchup commercial starring Matt LeBlanc in 1987. Other than that, Astley is a big music producer now. Virginia Astley, as stated, does have some lovely tracks as well!!

  3. @ RA Feutz What an awesome ad – thanks for the link! Love your blog, BTW

  4. So glad to finally have this one. Super rare. I have to check out that Virginia Astley album too. Thanks
