China Crisis – Working With Fire And Steel (12″)

1983 found China Crisis at the height of their popularity, using modern technology to shape their subtle sound. Eddie Lundon and Gary Daly had the backing of Virgin Records with the production of Mike Howlett (Flock Of Seagulls) The earlier stuff was very synthy and cutting edge. This was a quirky tribute to the Industrial Revolution and the exploitation of the working class, there is even a swear word in there! The “Mix” is an extended version with more of that lovely, rumbling, walking bassline sound (that Paul Young liked to use)  The b-side comprises of 2 moody instrumentals, “Dockland” has a real haunting quality to it whilst the delayed, dream-like guitar on “Forever  I and I” proves how good they were as musicians.

  1. I still have yet to finish up my C.C. singles for all to enjoy. This was always a favourite of mine and pretty much introduced me to the band. After that, I bought most of their output. I was lucky enough to have a quick chat with Gary Daly a few years back and I had asked him if there was any chance that C.C. would put out a box set of CD singles for all their twelve inch releases similar to what Duran Duran did. He had a few words to say regarding that and said licensing was a bigger issue…So in general, NO. Truly disappointing.

    1. Boo! Licensing is a pain, hence we have these sorts of blogs! 🙂
