The Dolphin Brothers – Shining (12″)

Ex-Japan members Richard Barbieri and Steve Jansen released a couple of singles and an album back in 1987. This might of been the sound of Japan in the late 80’s with the help of Japanese producer, Yoshifumi Iio. It also benefits from a meaty John “Tokes ” Potoker mix. Upbeat with Talk Talk piano riff and plenty of electronic percussion.

The stand out track (and gem of the week) for me is the very Japan-esque, piano led “My Winter” (David Sylvian is not singing!) A beautiful, quiet, melancholic song; very seasonal.

  1. Jansen and Barbieri released an amazing collection of songs as The Dolphin Brothers. Prior to this album they released a very ambient/experimental album that was actually composed for NASA to accompany space shuttle footage. This was a way back to the sound they were meant to inhabit and see to some unfinished business.

  2. What a treat! Thank you very much!

  3. What a find – thanks mate! Just ordered Steve’s new album, so it’s raining Jansens ATM

  4. Thank you for this, I had the album back in the day, but never any of the 12” singles. Anything Japan/Sylvian/JBK related would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
