Petula Clarke – Downtown ’88 (12″)

From noise terror to kitsch. It’s all in the juxtaposition.

Originally from 1964 and still sounding as good as it was when it was released this suffered  a DMC remix in 1988 by Peter Slaghuis (a.k.a. Hithouse, now named and shamed) To appeal to hip young things, it sounds like Erasure doing a cover, especially on this extended mix. Went down a storm in the student nights in the late ’80s.

Backed by another of her hits from that era “Don’t Sleep In The Subway” love the originals but what were they thinking ???

I love these early attempts at remixing old tracks. Peter did a pretty good remix around the same time of Ram Jam – Black Betty and of Ain’t No Sunshine
