First time on here for the Beastie Boys and this cut from 1987. I ran a mile from this back in the day, just didn’t get it, it sounded so D.I.Y. and basic. Since then I’ve nearly come round to it, thanks to their legacy and connection with Rick Rubin and Def Jam Recordings. Off the “Licensed to Ill ” album which was released in 1986, this was the last single to be taken off it.
A double A-side, “Girls” features tinny toy piano over some cheesy, sexist rap that mimics the Isley Brothers “Shout.” Nah still don’t get this track.
Now the mix of Led Zeppelin samples and rap on “She’s Crafty” works well, with added cowbell.
The pick of the bunch is “Rock Hard” which samples AC/DC’s “Back In Black” and has HUGE drum machine beat, it was apparently recorded in 1985, groundbreaking stuff.
