The Adventures – Broken Land (12″)

Debut on this blog for Belfast’s , The Adventures, and their biggest hit”Broken Land.” Written and sung by guitarist Pat Gribben; the band consisted of his wife, Eileen, the late Tony Ayre on bass, Paul Crowder on drums and Spud Murphy (ex Angelic Upstarts) on guitar. Piano and guitar blend well with some traditional Irish accompaniment towards the end on this perfectly crafted pop song from this 1988, a top 20 hit. Their first single off the album “The Sea Of Love,” it fits in nicely alongside the stuff that Talk Talk and Tears For Fears (a band they supported on tour) were doing at the time.

B-side is “Don’t Stand On Me”, quicker, rockier and with a synthy bass and overdubbed rhythms, produced by John Hudson. The “Acoustic Version” showcases that great voice, bizarrely, all the instruments kick in at the end, drums included.

  1. Thanks, big fan of this album I bought it when it came out in the 80’s. At the time I had heard (incorrectly) that Tears for Fears had produced the album so I snapped it up. I don’t know if you’ve heard the parent album, it’s an odd duck, sorta commercial Simple Minds married with A-Ha’s Scoundrel Days. Big, earnest, soaring songs.

    1. Re-upped and a nice choice!
