Comateens – Don’t Come Back / Deal With It (US Promo 12″)

A post over at Post-Punk Monk’s blog prompted me to put this Mike rip up next. Comateens, to me, where a bit of a mystery.  From Discogs:

The Comateens were formed in New York in 1978 by Ramona Jan (guitar), Nik North (bass, vocals), and a drum machine. After Lyn Byrd (synthesizer, vocals) and Oliver North (guitar, vocals) joined the group, they recorded their self-titled debut LP in 1981. The album became a cult favorite among college hipsters, especially the band’s remake of “The Munsters Theme” (????)

So we get a bit of a soundclash , Duran Duran meets Talking Heads. Produced by Peter Solley (English keyboard session player in the 70’s) The lead track is a little cheesy and the twelve has very tinny keyboards and actually sounds a bit Kajagoogoo, with plenty of funky guitars. “Deal With It” is a bit more inventive and has a New Wave edge to it, with a fun organ riff and a great “dance mix”. LCD Soundsystem were busy taking notes.
