Camouflage – The Great Commandment (US Promo 12″ + Original German 12″ + US 12″ + US CD Promo)

A small story attached to this, whilst at College someone gave me a tape that had a load of new bands on I’d never heard of before (Skinny Puppy, Front 242 etc..) and there was also this track. I managed to lose the box with the tracklist on and for quite a while someone who heard it said it was a long lost Depeche Mode track from their early stuff (Broken Frame era) I believed them and eventually, after about 6 months, found the box and identified the track by a band called as a German synth quartet, Camouflage.

Depeche Mode – copyists ? Certainly the 7″ sounds like it was recorded in 1983/4.

So thanks Mike for this Promo with some more mixes by Justin Strauss released in 1988 and sounding like Depeche Mode from , er, 1988! Much improved with slight Acid House touches and borrowing the bassline of “Strangelove.”

The “Acid Commandment” is my fave from the remixes, quite a deep acid house track which even use the “Acccieeed” sample! Very squelchy!

Here is the original , very raw and basic version from September 1987. The original trio of Heiko Maile, Marcus Meyn and Oliver Kreyssig

It has a Kraftwerk type Bridge type and some guitar samples and obscure vocal / conversation parts. Both mixes are pretty different with Radio mix going more down the DM route.

A dark and mysterious instrumental lurks on the B-side. Backwards vocal parts and an air of the exotic. Love it !!

And finally the US Promo CD with yet 2 more variants. With I guess a Radio version at 3:14 with a quicker fade out. The other mix starts with some dramatic sampled sounds, the pick of all the mixes.

  1. Greatest Depeche Mode song ever (by a non-DM band)!!! Love the Acid Remix … Aciiiieed … I wish some label would put out a Justin Strauss compilation already … that man remixed every great song of the 80s

  2. Clearly the greatest Depeche song not written by Depeche! Their first 2 albums are as great as Depeche’s Black Celebration and Music For The Masses! THANK YOU for all the great remix vinyls!
