Suicide – The Second Album

suicided

So news has filtered through of another sad loss to music. Alan Vega founder of New York electro punks Suicide passed away yesterday.

Personally I had sort of missed out on their output. Coming across them on a few compilations, intense and edgy stuff I thought. The Elvis croon of Vega and long meandering electronics of Martin Rev scared me to death in the 80’s!

This second album I downloaded only a few weeks ago, the reissue by Mute with the added “Dream Baby Dream” single (I’ve not included the rehearsal tapes just the album). It’s intense stuff, DIY synths and repetitive drones with primitive electronic percussion. Less intense than the chaotic first album this was produced by Ric Ocasek (Cars keyboardist) and released in 1980. Still an album to sit down and listen in a dark room, no through away pop stuff here.

It is true, without them there would be no Soft Cell!  Influencing many artists such as Spiritualized, Spacemen 3, Henry Rollins, The Horrors and countless European electro bands.

So Mr. Vega, R.I.P. you had a good innings living to 78, unlike a lot of the legends we lost this year. Cheers for the tunes!
