Malcolm McLaren – Duck For The Oyster (12″)

From 1983 and the big question did Malcolm Mclaren put out novelty records just for fun or was he secretly trying to be a pioneer of early dance and electronic music. Art of Noise fans need to note that this was a Trevor Horn project before he had the Art Of Noise firing on all cylinders. Fairlight sampling is all over it and with the mighty “Hobo Scratch” track this him getting into electro and Hip Hop.

So the main track is basically a country and western square dance , a bit like the previous years B-side of Buffalo Gals, with more witty samples. Er, quite horrendous actually. Of interest is the instrumental “Legba” a proto- Art Of Noise ambient track made on the PPG Wave synth by Anne Dudley. Finally, the amazing “Hobo Scratch” weighing in at over 9 minutes long. Malcolm in true “culture vulture” mode
