The Flying Pickets ‎– Only You (12″)

Okay time to drag this skeleton from the cupboard of 1983 and a cappella group, The Flying Pickets ,heavily enhanced by some clever studio trickery and electronics for the main track “Only You”  The Flying Pickets were  David Brett, Ken Gregson, Brian Hibbard, Rick Lloyd, Red Stripe and Gareth Williams and this was a one hit wonder. You also get the Rick Lloyd penned “Disco Down” in doh-wop swing.

So as well as getting a Yazoo cover (a hit for them the previous year only getting to Number 2), on the B-side we get a couple of live reinterpretations recorded at Goldsmiths College, London. They reveals a humorous side, especially on “Summertime” the cover of Gershwin given a drug theme!!! The frantic take of the Rolling Stones “Get Off My Cloud” is a fascinating listen, yup they were talented

Barber-shop quartets had never been so trendy.

  1. cheesy (bad synthapella) but absolutely love this version! I wonder if Depeche Mode ever regretted not accepting this song as a parting gift by Vince Clarke. I also wonder what it would sound like with Gahan singing it.
