Soft Cell – Down In The Subway (12″)

From 1984 and the last charting single from Soft Cell, a cover of the R&B classic written by Jack Hammer. A more organic sounding Soft Cell jazzes it up with production from Mike Johnson making them sound like a full on swing band. Unfortunately it’s not the extended remix but the normal 12″ with 2 b-sides; the more normal, Soft Cell sounding “Disease And Desire.” This featured Gary Barnacle on saxophone and feels like a left off track from “The Art Of Falling Apart.” The other track is another cover, “Born To Lose” originally by American Punk, Johnny Thunders and it’s as rocky as Soft Cell gets.
