From 1985 and the dream pop of The Dream Academy. The one with the Enya like chants, it soothes, it calms in a wistful way. I didn’t really like it when it first came out but it is a fine track to these older ears.Produced by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, it is all about Nick Drake and his battle with depression. The singer’s voice reminds of Bernard Sumner (New Order) crossed with bits Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) especially on the 2 quality B-sides.
The whale samples on “Test Tape No.3” start a slice of drum machine driven indie, a bit like later Talk Talk. “Poised On The Edge Of Forever” appeared in the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and has more than a passing resemblance to Prefab Sprout.
Lucia Holm went on to be the singer in Sunscreem. Dario G sampled the chorus for his house track, “Sunchyme” (is there anymore sun references I can get in?)
